Schengen visa applications from Accra: what actually gets approved

The documents consulates in Accra look at hardest, the mistakes we see most often, and how far ahead to book your appointment.
Most Schengen refusals we review in Accra come down to three things: an itinerary that does not match the bank statements, a sponsor letter with no supporting documents, and an appointment booked too late to reschedule.
Start with the bank statements. Six months, stamped, with a balance that comfortably covers your stated trip cost plus a margin. Large deposits in the final weeks invite questions, so if funds are coming from family, document the transfer and include the sponsor's own statements.
Second, make the itinerary real. Confirmed flight reservations, paid or held hotel bookings, and a day-by-day plan that matches them. If you are visiting family, the invitation letter needs the host's residence permit copy and proof of address.
Third, book early. Appointment slots for France, Italy and the Netherlands routinely run six to eight weeks out in the December and summer peaks. We hold slots for clients as soon as travel dates are agreed.
Finally, expect the consulate to keep your passport for the processing window. Do not plan any other international travel in that period — we have had to unpick that more than once.
